The Trevor Osborne Property Group and Danubius Hotels new 5 star Gainsborough Thermal Spa Hotel in Bath is now commencing construction after archaeologists uncovered a rare and exciting hoard of Roman coins.

A rough estimate puts the total number of coins found at over a thousand, which are now awaiting valuation under the provisions of the Treasure Act. Whilst coins have been found throughout the Roman Empire and some 1500 have been discovered in Britain, most known examples are from rural locations. Examples of hoards found in towns are very rare, due largely to the more limited opportunities for discovery.

The coins have been provisionally identified as ‘Antoniniani’ dating them to the middle of the 3rd Century AD. They were found in one of the 2000 year old Roman bathing pools which lie beneath the new hotel’s own spa – creating a fascinating link with the past for future guests who will be able to bathe in classic surroundings in the same way as their early ancestors – for the spa will be designed to recreate the ‘Roman’ sequence of bathing and relaxation in a series of pools and rooms all at different temperatures.
